This Editorial Policy explains how guides on Used Car Checker are written and updated. Operator: Mark Bolton. Contact: [email protected].
Purpose
Guides exist to help UK buyers interpret MOT history and related checks. They are original explainers, not scraped mirrors of government pages or other sites.
Sources
We prefer primary sources: DVSA and DVLA pages on GOV.UK, official MOT manuals and fee tables. Where we summarise the law or test rules, we link out. Vehicle look-ups use government APIs; we do not invent pass/fail results.
Examples
Worked examples use invented vehicles and clearly say so. We do not publish real customers’ registrations as case studies without a lawful basis and clear labelling.
Dates
We do not fabricate “Published 20xx” dates. New guides show real publication and modification dates in page metadata where present.
Corrections
Email factual errors to [email protected]. We check against the primary source and correct the page when we are wrong. We cannot rewrite the underlying DVSA/DVLA record for a vehicle — that must be fixed at source.
Funding
The site may show Google AdSense adverts. Advertising does not decide MOT conclusions or guide recommendations. Paid history products from other companies are mentioned only to explain what free MOT data does not cover.
What we do not do
- Write finished promo posts for unrelated businesses from this desk.
- Guarantee AdSense approval or search rankings.
- Offer regulated financial, legal or insurance advice.
Who writes the guides
Guides are written and edited by the Used Car Checker team operated by Mark Bolton. We do not present fictional expert credentials. Where a page says “Written by the Used Car Checker team”, that means the same operator and editors responsible for the site’s MOT tools and trust pages.
Updates
When rules, fees or API behaviour change, we update the affected guide and refresh the “Last updated” note. Cosmetic edits may not change the date. Substantial corrections are summarised on the page when the change would otherwise mislead a buyer.
Independence
We are not affiliated with DVSA, DVLA, dealerships or finance companies. Links to GOV.UK and to paid check providers are explanatory. We may earn advertising revenue through Google AdSense; that does not change MOT data returned by government APIs.
Reader questions
Email [email protected] if a guide is unclear or appears out of date. We cannot provide personalised legal, financial or insurance advice, and we cannot alter an official MOT record.
